Dominiek Steinmeijer creates very personal memorials in glass, stone or other materials.
‘‘It must become a place to be loved‘‘, she says. ‘‘Otherwise there is no point in placing a memorial.‘‘
Click here for photographs. Her first memorial-pieces were designed for close friends. They approached her not only as an artist and designer and because of her extensive knowledge of the materials, but also because of her talent to listen and to then create a monument wherein the family can recognize the essence of their loved one. The design process develops in close cooperation with the family. Dominiek takes time to look at photographs and learn more about the life of the deceased. ‘‘I like to meet with the family at their home. This gives me an idea of their tastes and what they like. What kind of art do they have in the house, for example, or what decorations or jewellery? We talk about these things and I show examples of my work and ask their opinions. I ask them to tell me what they like and what they don‘t like. Finding out what someone doesn‘t like is important too.‘‘
The designing and creating of a memorial takes time and involvement. ‘‘It is my design, but created through looking and listening to the family‘‘, says Dominiek. ‘‘In this way the work becomes familiar for the family, and something to cherish for years to come.‘‘ If you would like to see more photographs, please click on the images on this page or scroll through the following pages.
