Dominiek Steinmijer - Beeldend vormgever van sieraden, gedenkmonumenten en kunst in opdracht

Dominiek Steinmeijer (1957) lives and works in Velsen-Zuid. She works as a sculptor and jewellery designer and teaches glass and metal at the Velsen art centre.

Dominiek works with an array of materials, including silver, glass, steel, titanium and clay.
All of these materials share a certain resilience to manipulation.

In recent years Dominiek has worked extensively with fused glass – glass from a furnace. Glass is a distinctive medium. It can be found all around us yet it is still extraordinary. This train of thought was the inspiration for her commissioned works for Woonmij Zaanstad and the Staatsloterij (Dutch national lottery). A further challenge of these works was the combination of glass and metal.

Her very personal commemorative monuments are also in glass, sometimes combined with stone and metal.
Dominiek also makes jewellery using titanium and silver. Titanium is a tough and stable metal, notoriously difficult to work with. The characteristic colour of the jewellery is acquired through a process of anodization. The pieces undergo a treatment in an acid bath through which an electric current is passed. These pieces in titanium and silver are hammered, pulled and coaxed into shape - created through the channelling of much physical energy. The techniques Dominiek applies to titanium are unique in the Netherlands.

Her objects have their own distinctive style and although the size may vary, Dominiek’s signature can be found in the monumental nature of the designs. As well as larger objects, Dominiek makes jewellery (unique pieces), corporate gifts, small objects and monuments. Her work can be found in international galleries, museum shops, housing corporations, institutions, councils and governmental institutions.

From 1981 she has exhibited extensively, including: Michaelskerk/ Oosterland, Ministerie van Financiën/ Den Haag, Zijde Museum/ Wouw, Kunst mit Seide/ Airport Gallery - Frankfurt, Uitvaartbeurs/ Haarlem, Houtplein Exposities/ Provincie Noord-Holland, NOS-Mediacentrum/ Hilversum, 't Spant/ Bussum, Hogeschool Amsterdam, Paleis van Justitie/ Amsterdam, Galerie Pignon/ Groot Schermer, Galerie Ei/ Amsterdam, SBK/ Haarlem en Beverwijk, Martiniplaza/ Groningen, Bataviawerf in Lelystad, Glasrijk Tubbergen , Sunday Market Westergasfabriek Amsterdam, glass exhibition Leerdam, Beeldentuin Buitenplaats Wester-Amstel, De Kemphaan/ De Woude, Dutch Design Week 2011/ Cécile van Eeden Eindhoven, Bulleye Gallery/ Portland, USA (in cooperation with Silvia Levenson).
